According to numerous media reports, Google announced on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached with Brookefield Renewable Energy to purchase up to 3 million kilowatts of United States hydropower resources, marking the birth of the largest enterprise in the world, the Clean Water Energy Purchase Agreement. This is at a time when large technology companies are seeking to provide energy for their rapidly expanding energy-intensive data centres.

According to the agreement, Google signed an initial 20-year power purchase agreement with Brookefield Asset Management, amounting to $3 billion, which will come from two hydroelectric power plant facilities in Pennsylvania. It was also reported on Tuesday that the technology giant was also planning to invest $25 billion in the next two years in the construction of data centres in Pennsylvania and neighbouring states. To meet the huge demand for electricity in the data centres required for artificial intelligence and cloud computing, the scientific and technological industries are urgently seeking large-scale clean power supply. Driven by this environment, electricity consumption in the United States, which has been stagnant for almost 20 years, has risen to record highs.

The news is expected to be discussed at an AI summit in Pittsburgh by Ruth Porat, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Google parent company Alphabet. The United States President, Donald Trump, will also attend the summit, which is expected to announce AI and energy investment projects totalling $70 billion. Amanda Peterson Corio, Head of Energy, Google Data Centre, stated in his statement: “Working with Brookefield is an important step in ensuring a clean energy supply to the PJM area where we operate (the largest regional grid in the United States). Over the past year or so, Google has signed a number of groundbreaking power purchase agreements, including carbon-free geothermal and advanced nuclear energy. It is also working with PJM Interconnector, the largest power grid operator in the United States, to use AI technology to accelerate new energy grid-connection processes.

In the latest agreement, Google indicated that an initial framework agreement had been signed with Brookefield, the parent company of Brookefield Renewable Energy. Brookefield Renewable Energy Corporation is responsible for the development and operation of renewable energy power plants. The two companies indicated that, as part of the agreement, two hydroelectric plants in Brockfield in Pennsylvania would be upgraded and the licence renewed. Google indicated that it was planned to eventually extend the scope of the agreement beyond those power stations to cover other parts of the Central Atlantic and the Central West of the United States.
